OVERVIEW OF OUR ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

Our academic programmes combine three key components:


1. Advanced Coursework

Trainees undertake structured courses that provide in-depth knowledge in their chosen specialty. The curriculum integrates evidence-based medicine, dentistry emerging technologies, and interdisciplinary learning.


2. Clinical Training

Hands-on clinical training is conducted in accredited teaching hospitals and affiliated health institutions. This allows trainees to gain practical experience under the supervision of experienced consultants and specialists.


3. Research and Dissertation

Research forms a central component of our programmes. Trainees are required to conduct independent research addressing real-world health problems and present their findings through a dissertation or thesis.


Our programmes offered are;


MD/MS

The Doctor of Medicine, Master of Surgery (MD/MS) Residency programme is a programme which is meant for the young Physicians pursuing a specialization in a medical / surgical specialty leading them to becoming specialists in their various clinical specialties. 


The programme is specifically for Doctors that has just recently received their Medical Diploma and have completed a 12-month post graduation internship.


The Academic Programme

The MD/MS programme is a medical and surgical residency postraduate programme awarding the Doctor of Medicine (MD) and a Master of Surgery (MS) degree. 


Post-graduate diploma - PGD holders and Diplomate of National Board - DNB (India), Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery - MBBS, MBChB, BMBS, MBBCH, Doctor of Medicine - MD, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine - DO (The United States).


Candidates with the above named degrees can apply to enter the MD/MS residency programme, which leads to a specialized practice(in medical and surgical specialties)

MDS

At NIHMER, we are proud to offer the Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) specialist training programme for General Dentists that want advanced education in dental sciences. As a leading medical and dental institute, we focus on quality teaching, hands-on experience, research and strong clinical training to prepare you for a successful career in dentistry.

The Academic Programme

The MDS Course is a specialised postgraduate programme designed for dental graduates who want to become experts in clinical practice and dental research. This course focuses on advanced learning beyond the basic dental degree. At NIHMER, the MDS programme covers both theoretical knowledge and practical training in various dental fields.


Our MDS programme aims to train students to become competent professionals who can handle complex dental cases, conduct research, and contribute to the dental community with quality care. Our curriculum helps dentists develop clinical and diagnostic skills and teaches them to work with honesty and responsibility.


The MDS Course Duration at NIHMER is three years. This period includes classroom teaching, clinical practice, research projects, and hands-on experience in real dental cases. The continuous training helps Dentists gain experience and confidence in their chosen dental specialisation.


During these three years, students also learn through workshops, seminars, patient handling, and clinical training. This experience helps them face real dental practice challenges with confidence.

DM

The Doctorate of Medicine (DM) is an accredited advanced senior medical residency training programme, it has been designed to recognize super specialty experience in the field of postgraduate Medical studies.

The Academic Programme

The DM Programme has been designed for the physician with Speciality qualifications wanting to gain super-specialty knowledge as well as for the senior physicians to gain expertise and knowledge in Medicine and to gain an additional qualification. Open to applicants holding registered post-graduate medical qualifications in the offered/related field.


The 5-Year DM Programme is a PG entry programme specifically for the young medical graduates with MBBS, MD, BM, MBChB or it's equivalence. After the third year, the postgraduate trainee receives an MD in General Internal Medicine, and proceeds to the DM Programme in this case, the third of the MD programme overlaps with the first year of the DM programme.


The new DM certification being offered by NIHMER welcomes qualified post-graduates to undertake super-specialty experience and aims to recognize this period of training thus leading to the award of the DM

MCh

The Master of Chirurgiae (M.Ch.) is a  Postgraduate specialist senior residency training programme designed for the senior surgeons to enhance their surgical expertise, knowledge and gain a super speciality qualification in a surgical specialty.

The Academic Programme

This senior residency training programme runs for THREE (3) years, except for Neurosurgery which runs for FIVE (5) years.  After the Surgeon has completed a speciality training in the MS General Surgery  coursework or ENT. (Not required for Neurosurgery) Each year is of 6 months duration. Out of the 3 years, the first 2 years are intensive Clinical Practice at our various Hospitals the last year will be dedicated for research and thesis writing Students are expected to accomplish 12 theory & clinical modules and undergo clinical research course.


The 5-Year direct M.Ch. Programme is a PG entry programme specifically for the young medical Graduate with MBBS, MD, DO, BM, MBChB or it's equivalence. After the third year, the postgraduate trainee receives an MS in General Surgery, and proceeds to the M.Ch. Programme. In this case, the third year of the MS programme overlaps with the first year of the M.Ch. programme The academic process follows thus: 


After enrolling in the university, student will pursue his/her course at our Hospitals Each student will have a Course Tutor/ Programme Chair with the sole responsibility of providing support to the students throughout the course. Students will submit periodical reports - Assignments and Case reports - to the university PG coordination office. The students will also review the latest research articles in his/her subject and publish it in international journals. 


These articles will be peer reviewed before publication. To complete the M.Ch, there is a requirement to participate in both the clinical activities of the sub specialties, and in one or more independent research projects. 


This should preferably involve the recent advances in the respective sub specialties. M.Ch. candidates are expected to publish at least three research articles in a referred journal At the end of the course student will appear for the clinical examination.
